Amedeo Umberto Isabella Luigi Filippo Maria Giuseppe Giovanni di Savoia
(Turin, October 21 1898 - Nairobi, March 3 1942) was an Italian prince. It was Duke of Apulia, the third Duke of Aosta and viceroy ' Italian East Africa. It is also known by the nickname "Hero of the Area Alagi.
Amedeo was born in Turin by Emanuele Filiberto, Duke of Aosta second, and Elena of Bourbon-Orléans. At the entrance of ' Italy in World War volunteered, only 16 years, as a pure gunner of the glorious Voloire . The father Emanuele Filiberto introduced him to General Petitti Roreto saying: "No privilege, to be treated like other" [1] . From the start, Amedeo was sent to the front line serving as artillery on Karst, earning the rank of field lieutenant thanks to war. After the war he obtained his father's permission to follow his uncle, Luigi di Savoia in Somalia, engaged in the exploration of Uebi Shabelle River with the aim of creating a farm for the cultivation of cotton , barrel sugar and oilseeds . Together they built a railroad and a village, called Villaggio Duca degli Abruzzi. Subsequently, Amedeo studied at ' Eton College and Oxford University , learning the English language perfectly . In 1921 Amedeo left for the Congo and was hired as a laborer in a soap factory in Stanleyville (now Kisangani ). On July 24 1925, returned to Italy, received his military pilot license . Back in Africa , Amedeo performed numerous reconnaissance flights, gaining a silver medal for military valor for the bold actions on the flight Cyrenaica [1] .

resided at the Castle of Miramare to Trieste, and commanded the 29th Artillery Regiment Gorizia. At that time he was also honorary president of the 'Unione Sportiva Triestina Calcio .

Following the death of his father in Emanuele Filiberto 1931, assumed the title of Duke Amedeo d'Aosta. In 1932 joined the Royal Air Force and became, after the Italian conquest of 1936 , Viceroy 's Ethiopia. After the Second Italo-Abyssinian War, the 21 October 1937 Amedeo of Savoy was appointed governor-general (and commander in chief) 's Italian East Africa and Viceroy of Ethiopia. In 1941 , facing the overwhelming advance of the British in ' Italian East Africa, the few Italian troops remained under his command retreated to organize a last stand on mountains Ethiopians. Amedeo is barricaded by April 17 to May 17 1941 on ' Amba Alagi with 7,000 men, a force composed of police officers, airmen, sailors from the base of Assab, 500 soldiers and about 3,000 indigenous health. The Italian camp was soon besieged by the forces of General Cunningham (39,000 men). The Italian soldiers, both in number and less resources, showed great value, but remained exhausted from the cold, lack of water and firewood and weakened by mass defections of native soldiers, had to surrender to British . On day 14 Amedeo obtained permission to surrender to Mussolini and appointed as negotiator General Volpini, which, however, was killed with his bodyguard by Ethiopian rebels who surrounded the Italian lines eager for revenge. At 12:00 of May 17 the terms of surrender were agreed upon by the general Trezzani Cordero di Montezemolo and the Italian side, and Colonel Dudley Russell for the English side. The British would have made the honor survivors and officials have kept the gun. However, the British did not fully complied with the terms of the surrender terms proposed by them and freely sottofirmate. After the ceremony of ' honors of war, the Duke of Aosta preferred follow the fate of his soldiers, becoming a prisoner of the English.
Amedeo, taken prisoner, was sent to Kenya in air. During the flight were sold for a few moments the controls, so as to enable him to drive for the last time [1] . Arriving in Kenya , was taken prisoner by the British at Donyo Sàbouk, a place unhealthy and infested by malaria 70 kilometers from Nairobi . Despite Amedeo intercede with the British authorities to improve the conditions of the Italian soldiers and the return of civilians, the British command not allowed to receive or to visit any other prisoners.
In November 1941 began to experience some illness. A December, a high fever forced him to bed. Three weeks after the British command Amedeo allowed to travel to visit the Italian prisoners of war (its release would be the last), but prevented him from greeting them personally: Amedeo got just that the car proceeded at a crawl in front of the gates of the prison camp. Behind the gates, the Italian prisoners tended to his hands and called him by name, while Amedeo did not bother to wipe that tears running down his face. For him, already ill, there was nothing sadder of not being able to greet, for the last time, its soldiers. On January 26 1942's were diagnosed malaria and tuberculosis [1] . Amedeo died on 3 March 1942 military hospital in Nairobi where he was recently hospitalized. At his funeral, also wore the British general mourning on the arm. To express its will is buried at the shrine of Italian military Nyeri, Kenya in , along with 676 soldiers. Since Amedeo had only daughters, the title of duke was succeeded by his brother Aimone. 1962, the initiative local Aeroclub and with the participation of 'Weapon Association of Aeronautics and ' Air Force, was inaugurated a monument in honor of Prince Amedeo at ' airport of Gorizia . The monument consists of 10 stones that recall the most significant stages of the military exploits of Amedeo, over which stands a marble statue travertine 5 meters tall depicting the Duke aviator's uniform with his face to 's Africa [1] . Another monument to Amadeus is located in the park Miramare Castle in Trieste where he resided with his family before leaving for Ethiopia. This castle was fatal to those who have lived, in fact Maximilian of Hapsburg departed from "Miramar" (Carducci ) to wear the imperial crown of Mexico and I was shot. Amedeo of Savoy went to the Empire of Ethiopia of which he was viceroy and died in captivity.
Amedeo had the reputation of being a gentleman. Before he left his home to Addis Ababa wrote a note to the British controls to thank them in advance of future protection for women and children of the place. L ' Emperor Haile Selassie also was impressed by the respect Amedeo proved against him. During his official visit to Italy, in 1953 , Haile Selassie invited for tea Anne of Orléans, the widow of the Duke of Aosta, but when the Italian government informed him that the Duchess would get offended republic Haile Selassie was forced to cancel the meeting with regret. In exchange, invited fifth Duke of Aosta in Ethiopia in the mid-sixties and granted him all the honors of a head of state.
